PepsiCo

As You Sow filed shareholder proposals in 2008, 2009, and 2010 asking the company to develop container recovery goals. In early 2010, we withdrew our proposal after the company agreed to achieve a 50% industry recycling rate for industry beverage containers by 2018. In its announcement agreeing to goals, the company credited As You Sow with helping it establish goals.

The company also announced a partnership with Waste Management Inc. to begin to increase container recovery by placing about 3000 Dream Machine recycling kiosks recycling in public spaces near convenience stores and gas stations. This is a commendable first step by Pepsi to increase container recycling. However, substantial additional actions will be required to put the company on a trajectory to meet its 2018 recycling commitment.

PepsiCo has maintained its commitment to use 10% recycled PET content in plastic bottles sold in the U.S. market and in 2010 it introduced plastic bottles for its Naked Juice brand with 100% recycled PET.

The company received a "B-", the second-highest grade, in the 2011 scorecard on beverage container recycling policies.
